Wie lässt sich Geschichte durch Objekte erzählen? Und was sagen uns Objekte, wenn wir sie als Träger materieller Kultur ernst nehmen? Wie gelingt es den Museen, ihre Sammlungen stets neu zum Sprechen zu bringen? Diesen und weiteren Fragen geht das von den weltweit führenden Wissenschafts- und Technikmuseen geleitete Artefacts-Konsortium nach.

Projektbeschreibung

Artefacts ist ein Konsortium von Wissenschafts- und TechnikhistorikerInnen, mehrheitlich von Museen und Universitäten, mit dem Ziel, objektorientierte Ansätze in der historischen Forschung zu befördern. Dieses Ziel wird verfolgt durch (1) jährliche Konferenzen, (2) eine im Verlag Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press erscheinende Buchreihe und (3) durch die Förderung objektorientierter Forschung in internationalen Wissenschafts- und Technikmuseen.

Die letzte Konferenz, das Artefacts-Meeting XXV, fand vom 4. bis 6. Oktober 2020 online, veranstaltet vom Canada Science and Technology Museum und dem neuen Ingenium Centre in Ottawa, zum Thema „Access“ statt.

Gastgeber der Konferenz im Jahr 2022 wird vom 17. bis 19. Oktober das Deutsche Museum sein. Die Veranstaltung zum Thema “Objects in Motion” steht in Verbindung mit dem ebenfalls am Deutschen Museum stattfindenden „Global Summit of Research Museums II“.

4.-6. Oktober 2020, Thema “Access”

Access to artefacts is a central element in their study and analysis. The ability to see, examine, and interrogate objects is, more often than not, the starting point for engaging with the material culture and history of science and technology. But access in relation to artefacts can, and does, mean so much more than physical proximity. Taken another way, access can also mean our ability to share, represent, and interpret these histories.

As museums rethink the role of access, curators, conservators, and other staff, are presented with opportunities to get creative with the ways in which collections are shared with their publics. In some cases, accessibility guidelines are developed in response to new legislation. In others, digital tools and spaces are being experimented with in order to make a relatively stationary collection move across the virtual world and appeal to new audiences. Finally, care is taken to ensure that representation and the inclusion of marginalized voices and experiences are the focus of research that seeks to access these overlooked accounts of the history of science and technology
