Lampworking – Scientific Glassblowing

The glassblowing station is a tradition of many years’ standing at the Deutsches Museum. The present volume is based on these popular glassblowing demonstrations and offers a compact treatment of lampworking and scientific glassblowing. Many experienced glassblowers with many different specialties explain how they produce artisanal or technical objects over a flame. How exactly do lampworkers shape glass into Christmas ornaments, glass eyes or a Liebig condenser? Every step of the process has been carefully documented. Rounding out the section on artisanal glassblowing is a historical chapter on the origins of artisanal glassblowing in the Thuringian Forest and the history of scientific glassblowing.

In addition, readers learn about the role that scientific glassblowers play in today’s industry and research. How far would science have come without glass apparatus and the research it has enabled? Glass is more than just a simple nonconsumable used to make glass sheets and bottles. Glass is an unbelievably versatile material. As the present volume shows, glass is indispensable in both art objects and cutting-edge research.
