Specialty Glass
The area „Speciality Glass“ within the section Glass technology of the Deutsches Museum displays glasses for the most varied, in particular, technical applications. In contrast to “Hollow Glass ware” and “Flat Glass” these glasses are not primarily characterized by their shape, but rather by their special properties, such as high optical purity and homogeneity, chemical durability or thermal shock resistance.
The systematic investigations of the required specifics compositions of raw materials and of the resulting material properties started at the end of the 19th century and established this mostly recent and scientific chapter of glass technology.
